SEND Learning Support Assistant - Harrow

SEND Learning Support Assistant

Type: Temp - Perm

Hours: TBC

Dates: September 2026

Location: HA2, Harrow

Pay: £90 - £120 per day

This SEND Learning Support Assistant opportunity is based within a specialist Alternative Provision in Harrow, supporting young people who require additional educational, emotional, and behavioural support to engage successfully in learning.

You will work closely with students with a range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, learning difficulties, and those with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). The role involves providing both 1:1 and small-group support, helping learners access the curriculum, regulate their emotions, develop social skills, and achieve positive outcomes.

You will support students throughout the school day, assisting with academic activities, behaviour management strategies, emotional regulation, and personalised intervention programmes. Building positive, consistent relationships will be key to helping students develop confidence, resilience, independence, and engagement with learning.

Working collaboratively with teachers, the SENCo, pastoral staff, therapists, and external professionals, you will contribute to the implementation of individual support plans and behaviour strategies, ensuring each learner receives the support they need to succeed.

This is a rewarding opportunity to join a supportive and dedicated team committed to transforming the educational experiences of young people who may have faced barriers to learning in mainstream settings.

The school is seeking a committed and enthusiastic individual who:

  • Has experience supporting children or young people with SEND, SEMH needs, or challenging behaviour.
  • Holds GCSEs in English and Maths (Grade 4/C or above, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrates strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Has a patient, resilient, and nurturing approach.
  • Is confident supporting learners on a 1:1 basis and within small groups.
  • Can build positive and trusting relationships with students who may have experienced difficulties within education.
  • Works effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Is adaptable, proactive, and able to respond positively to changing situations.
  • Has good ICT and administrative skills.
  • Understands the importance of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide tailored 1:1 and small-group support to students with SEND and SEMH needs.
  • Support learners to engage positively in lessons and wider educational activities.
  • Assist with implementing EHCP targets, behaviour support plans, and intervention programmes.
  • Promote emotional wellbeing, positive behaviour, and social development.
  • Support students with literacy, numeracy, communication, and life skills development.
  • Monitor and record student progress, behaviour, and engagement.
  • Contribute to a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
  • Work closely with teaching and pastoral teams to ensure consistent support and positive outcomes for learners.

This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about supporting vulnerable young people, enjoys building meaningful relationships, and is committed to helping students overcome barriers to education within an Alternative Provision setting.
